RELEASE: Nearly 400 Clean Energy Leaders Urged Congress: “Don’t Quit on Clean Energy”

Joined by White House climate advisor, executives from Q CELLS America, Bloom Energy, CleanCapital, and Hemlock Semiconductor Operations announce petition calling for congressional action.

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, nearly 400 business leaders, allies, and workers from 80 clean energy companies urged policymakers to pass the climate and clean energy provisions of the Build Back Better Act, in a petition organized by Clean Energy for America.

Their message: Don’t quit on clean energy, or the U.S. will lose a singular opportunity to create good-paying jobs, lower families’ monthly utility bills, and combat climate change.

Four clean energy business leaders spoke at a virtual event to announce the petition, and they too urged Congress to act now and unleash greater job growth and private investment as America transitions to renewable power. At the event, they were joined by Ali Zaidi, Deputy White House National Climate Advisor.

“With the Build Back Better Act, Congress can encourage investment and deployment of clean energy technologies to empower communities and businesses to secure their energy future,” said Paul Wilkins, Vice President for Federal Policy with Delaware’s Bloom Energy. “This really matters for our country’s economy, workers, and communities.”

“Our company and workforce can clearly see that the Build Back Better Act will lower energy prices, create good-paying jobs, and grow American manufacturing,” said Scott Moskowitz, Director of Strategy and Public Affairs with Georgia’s Q CELLS North America. “This bill is very, very critical to the future of the clean energy industry. Without this bill, the future of these technologies is uncertain.”

“Passing this bill will mean thousands of new, well-paying jobs in the clean energy industry,” said Phil Dembowski, SVP and Chief Commercial Officer with Michigan’s Hemlock Semiconductor Operations. “Growing the solar supply chain at home not only means more good manufacturing jobs fighting climate change, like we have here at Hemlock, it means resilient supply chains and continued U.S. innovation accelerating our journey to a clean energy future.”

“Congress can and must send a clear signal to investors that the clean energy revolution will happen here in the U.S.,” said Jon Powers, president and co-founder of New York’s CleanCapital. “By passing the Build Back Better Act, policymakers can guarantee maximum private sector investment and secure U.S. leadership of the clean energy transition.”

The final petition with the signers listed is available here, and its text is below. The workers who signed the petition are employed at nearly 80 clean energy companies including:

Dear Congress,

We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to set our economy and our children's future up for success. We the clean energy leaders, workers, and job creators demand that Congress does not quit on clean energy.

Right now clean energy companies across this country are shaping America’s energy future. If Congress does not make bold investments in clean energy, the result will be catastrophic for all Americans.

Without investments today, we will lose:

  • Clean energy projects that employ hundreds-of-thousands of people in every state

  • Projects that pay prevailing wage and build the workforce with apprentices

  • Investment in American factories that bring clean energy equipment supply chains to the U.S.

  • Billions in investments in emerging technologies essential for reducing carbon emissions to zero

  • Affordable energy prices and a more reliable transmission grid

  • A once in a generation chance to address the climate crisis.

We cannot afford to quit on clean energy. We have too much to lose if Congress fails to act. For our economy and for our planet, we must invest in clean energy today.

The full petition is available here.
