October 10 Press Call: Tribal Leaders and Clean Energy Experts Discuss Results of $14 Billion Investments in Tribal Renewable Energy from Biden-Harris Administration
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – On Thursday, October 10 at 12pm ET / 9am PT, leading tribal and clean energy experts will join a media call with reporters, explaining how tribal communities across the U.S. have benefited from the Biden-Harris Affordable Clean Energy Plan, especially the August 2022 Inflation Reduction Act and the November 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. During the call, the panel of experts will provide remarks on what’s working and what they need from the next administration. Panelists will then answer questions from reporters.
Many tribal communities still lack access to reliable, affordable, or clean power. For example, according to 2023 data from the U.S. Department of Energy, “21% of Navajo Nation homes and 35% of Hopi Indian Tribe homes remain unelectrified,” and “Of the electrified homes within Tribal communities, 31% reported monthly outages.” Plus, according to DOE, “the energy burden of the average Tribal land resident is 28.3% higher than the average U.S. citizen.”
To help, the Biden-Harris administration passed its Affordable Clean Energy Plan, which includes nearly $14 billion to help Tribal communities and Native people save money and reduce pollution with clean energy. These funds are enabling life-changing investments, such as $5 million recently provided from the Department of Energy to the solar installer Navajo Power Home. Another is a $10 million matching grant from DOE that is expected to help 2,500 Taos Pueblo households save as much as $700 per year with solar panels and batteries.
