RELEASE: “The more clean energy we make, the safer we’ll be,” says former Navy Secretary in new, six-figure ad buy from CE4A affiliate

(Washington, D.C.)  – With the Russian invasion of Ukraine destabilizing energy prices around the world  and demonstrating how America’s dependence on oil “emboldens dictators like Putin”, former Navy Secretary Ray Mabus has a message for Congress: "the more clean energy we make, the safer we'll be."

Mabus delivers that message in a new ad airing in Wasington, D.C., on cable and digital platforms, thanks to a six-figure buy from CE4A’s affiliate, Clean Energy for America Education Fund (CE4AEF).

It’s the latest clean energy message to Congress from men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Earlier in April, over 50 veterans signed an open letter in The New York Times, urging policymakers to protect national security through clean power. Echoing that message were two video ads — “A Safer America” and “Oath” — running in Washington, D.C. as part of a six-figure digital ad buy from Clean Energy for America.

“Veterans know first-hand that U.S. dependence on oil endangers our wellbeing, and they know the real solution for our security is clean energy,” said Andrew Reagan, executive director of Clean Energy for America. “Secretary Mabus’ message is crystal clear: failure to invest in American-made clean energy is unacceptable.”

“Dependence on fossil fuels is a national security vulnerability for the U.S, and by transitioning to clean energy, we can improve our energy security and energy independence,” said Secretary Ray Mabus, who served as the 75th U.S. secretary of the Navy from 2009 to 2017. “Ramping up the production of American-made clean energy is the only path to achieving true energy security.

The calls from veterans and national security experts come as Congress returns to the negotiating table in Washington, D.C. to discuss investments in clean energy, like those that  passed through the House in a reconciliation bill in December. The investments would save households $500 per year in energy costs and set our nation on the path to true independence from oil.

The script for the ad is below:

As the former Secretary of the Navy, I dedicated myself to protecting our freedom and security. And make no mistake, one of the biggest threats to our nation’s security today is our dependence on oil. It emboldens dictators like Putin. And it makes us less safe.

If Congress can do one thing to make us more secure, it's to ramp up America’s production of clean energy, like solar, wind and electric cars. Because it’s made right here in America.

The more clean energy we make, the safer we’ll be.
