Clean Energy Spotlight: Camden Lang
Today’s #cleanenergyspotlight earned a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) in Petroleum Engineering, but she’s making new things possible in clean energy, having helped to develop the first-ever horizontal geothermal wells.
Camden Lang, of Reno, Nevada, works at the geothermal company Fervo Energy, where she’s a drilling and completions operations engineer. She was first introduced to geothermal energy at Colorado-School-Of-Mines, a public research university devoted to engineering and applied science. As she told us recently, “I participated in an industry externship with a geothermal operating company, analyzing drilling data and optimizing the drilling operations and well design.”
At school, she participated in many clubs, including the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers, and was even the president of the American Association of Drilling Engineers. Then, after graduating with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Petroleum Engineering, Lang lived in North Dakota and worked in oil and gas, but she’s been very happy to have transitioned to clean energy. As she explained to us, her new field gives her a “unique opportunity to be involved with technically advanced projects from the beginning, such as permitting and initial drilling, to end, such as long-term production alongside people from all backgrounds working in new and interesting locations.”
It’s interesting and important work. “My personal mission and values have now intertwined…Clean energy is positively impacting my Nevada community, as well as the country, by providing a reliable, 24/7 energy source to fuel the growing population, drive technical advancements, and create thousands of new jobs at varying levels.”
That’s why she believes policymakers should continue to support clean energy. “The human population is right on the cusp of a point of no return with our environmental degradation and existing energy source exhaustions, given remaining supply and increasing energy needs. We must recognize this pivotal point and act swiftly to support the growth and expansion of the clean energy industry, such as through prioritized investments and endorsements from Congress.”
For Lang, a bright career lies ahead, no doubt, and we’re excited to celebrate her today.
