Clean Energy for America’s Statement on House Republicans Electing Far-Right, IRA-Repealing Mike Johnson as Speaker

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, House Republicans elected fossil fuel-funded Mike Johnson (R-LA) to be the next Speaker of the House. In response, CE4A Executive Director Andrew Reagan released the following statement:

“House Republicans have selected a new Speaker of the House, after nearly three weeks without being able to clear the lowest possible bar of governance. And yet their pick, Rep. Mike Johnson, is an alarming one for America’s clean energy workforce and millions of America’s consumers and families who rely on them to cut pollution and bills. Speaker Johnson has voted to defund jobs, energy security and consumer savings by repealing the Inflation Reduction Act. And, he’s received over $338,000 from the oil and gas industry over his career.”

“This is an ‘or else’ moment. Speaker Johnson and House Republicans need to start prioritizing the wellbeing of everyone in America. They cannot just do the bidding of big oil and gas lobbyists — or else they’ll undoubtedly get punished next November by voters who want lower utility bills, less pollution, and more jobs and thus do not want far-right, oil-and-gas giveaways like repealing the IRA.”
