STATEMENT: CE4A’s Andrew Reagan on Sen. Manchin Rejecting Climate and Clean Energy Investments

(Washington, D.C.) – Thursday night, Senator Joe Manchin suddenly announced he would not support investments in climate and clean energy in the Democratic budget deal.

In response, CE4A’s Executive Director Andrew Reagan released the following statement:

“We are outraged by reports that Senator Joe Manchin has single-handedly decided that Congress will not deliver on clean energy and climate as part of a budget deal this year.

“For months, Senator Manchin has delayed and now finally derailed the investments in clean energy, justice and climate passed by the House last year and supported by the American people. This is an affront to the 81 million Americans who voted for change in 2020. Americans want clean energy action; Senator Manchin delivered only polluter protections.

“Accelerating the transition to clean energy will create good paying jobs here at home and lower energy costs for families. Failing to act only continues our dependence on fossil fuels, leaving Americans vulnerable to the whims of dictators and other bad actors that control the oil spigots.

“On behalf of our members that include clean energy leaders, workers, veterans, and business owners, we demand that Senator Manchin reconsider this disastrous and dangerous decision.

“Without congressional action on clean energy and climate, we will not be able to avoid the most catastrophic impacts of climate change. The entire clean energy industry lost a decade of certainty in growth, innovation and jobs at the whim of Sen Manchin. We are committed to keep pushing for action that tackles the climate crisis and accelerates the transition to clean energy to protect Americans from volatile fossil fuel markets that wreak havoc on prices and energy security. We need a Congress full of clean energy champions, and Clean Energy for America will do everything in its power to make that a reality that no one senator can undermine.”
