Washington, D.C. — New reporting from The New York Times reveals that President Trump has marshalled the full power of the federal government behind one succinct goal:  kneecap wind power. This is the culmination of an effort that started on Trump’s first day in office when he paused new leasing and permitting of wind energy projects on federal lands and waters.

Trump’s all-out war on wind power will have major consequences for energy affordability, reliability, and U.S. national security. In response to the President’s extreme, dangerous, and unaffordable energy agenda, Clean Energy for America Vice President of Strategy and Advocacy Hannah Malus issued the following statement:

“President Trump and his administration came into office promising to pursue an ‘all of the above’ energy policy. But unlike his promises to fossil fuel executives, it was all a lie. Time and time again, we’ve seen this administration’s priorities: Trump and his billionaire cabinet have launched an all-of-government assault on the clean energy industry to the detriment of affordability, reliability, and national security for American families. More than 90,000 clean energy jobs have been lost or stalled since Trump took office; families’ energy bills are rapidly climbing; and gutted investments mean the amount of new energy added to America’s grid in the next ten years could be reduced by up to 72 percent. With demand for energy – and in turn, its costs – skyrocketing, we need as many American-produced electrons flowing to the grid as possible. Now is not the time for the president to pick energy winners and losers based on misinformation and his personal interests.” ,

Timeline of Trump and Republican Actions Against Wind Energy Raising Electric Costs:

• Trump increased costs for developers by rescinding a rule that lowered fees for wind projects on federal lands.

• Trump and Republicans’ Big, Ugly Bill contributed to the more than 90,000 lost or stalled clean energy jobs since Trump took office.

• Following the bill’s passage, Trump’s Interior Department added more layers of bureaucracy for wind projects on federal lands.

  • Shortly after, the Department cancelled the Lava Ridge wind project in Idaho.

• After ramping up the timeline for phasing federal tax credits out, the Treasury Department made it harder for wind projects to claim them.

• The Agriculture Department stopped supporting wind projects on U.S. farmland.

• In late August, the administration issued a stop-work order on the Revolution Wind project, a wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island, the vast majority of which was already built.

• Now, Trump is coming after more offshore wind projects, cancelling hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grants for projects at ports.
