Republican Senators Pass Their Big, Ugly Bill That Kills Jobs and Raises Energy Costs

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Senate passed the “Big Ugly Bill,” legislation that will raise electricity costs for families, cancel billions in clean energy investments, and eliminate hundreds of thousands of jobs across Republican states—delivering a devastating blow to working families already struggling with rising costs.

“Right now, Republican lawmakers should be focused on lowering costs for families, creating good-paying jobs, and meeting our country’s growing energy needs. This bill does the opposite,” said Andrew Reagan, President of Clean Energy for America. “It guts clean energy tax credits, kills American jobs and ships them overseas, raises electricity bills for families and small businesses, and weakens our energy independence. It’s a disaster for American families. And when the power goes out, when clean energy workers lose their jobs, and when energy bills keep climbing—voters won’t have to wonder who’s to blame. It’s the Republicans who backed this bill.”

At this critical moment, Clean Energy for America launched a multi-platform accountability campaign targeting Republican lawmakers who support the legislation. The campaign includes a mobile billboard truck circulating throughout Washington, D.C., and a new website—RepublicanRateHike.org—that provides constituents with tools to contact their representatives and detailed information about how their lawmakers’ votes will directly impact their wallets and communities.

Now the bill heads to the U.S. House of Representatives, where many Republican members’ districts have received substantial clean energy investments— hundreds of thousands of jobs and billions in investments have flowed to these communities, helping to revitalize local economies and lower energy costs for constituents. If these incentives are gutted, investments that have made energy projects possible could vanish, leaving behind communities and the industries that have helped drive economic growth.
