Washington, D.C. — Last week, Clean Energy for America Senior Director of Partnerships & Policy Zainab Mirza joined Oregon State Treasurer Elizabeth Steiner and Americans for Responsible Growth to highlight how the Trump administration’s cancellation of billions in clean energy projects during and prior to the government shutdown is harming state economies and America’s global competitiveness.
On the call, Mirza discussed the devastating impact of the Trump administration’s cancellation of billions in clean energy projects, including another potential $15 billion round announced that morning. She explained how battery factories breaking ground, plants ready to hire, and grid modernization projects already under contract were suddenly canceled, sending workers home and leaving investors uncertain about America’s reliability as a partner.
“These projects have gone through numerous phases and rounds of diligence by the federal government, and communities have been promised long-term economic growth. Now they are being suddenly left in limbo,” said Zainab Mirza, Senior Director of Partnerships & Policy at Clean Energy for America. “If the U.S. government can pull the rug overnight, it tells investors and businesses to not trust America to keep its word at this point. It’s devastating for an industry that runs on long-term planning and capital investment, who are now turning their heads back to China and the EU.”
Since the beginning of 2025, Clean Energy for America has been tracking the impact of the Republican reconciliation bill and project cancellations on America’s clean energy sector. With energy demand surging due to AI, data centers, and extreme heat – and 93 percent of all new electricity capacity last year coming from solar, wind, and batteries – these policy decisions are putting nearly 3.5 million American clean energy jobs at risk. It is particularly reckless to decimate an industry that has been growing and generating more than $840 billion in total investments.
