Washington, D.C. — House Republicans today voted to pass their disastrous reconciliation bill, forcing American families to pay higher energy bills and killing American jobs, all while ceding our competitive edge to China and increasing the risk of blackouts and brownouts by undermining America’s energy capacity and grid reliability.

“Today, House Republicans voted for a Republican Rate Hike. They’re breaking the promises they made to lower costs for American families. Instead, this bill will raise electricity costs, it will kill hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs, and it will surrender the AI race to China,” said Andrew Reagan, President of Clean Energy for America. “Gutting energy tax credits is counterintuitive any way you look at it. Clean energy is the cheapest, fastest way to get power on the grid—and it’s not going anywhere. But Republicans who backed this bill are shooting themselves in the foot. Every factory that closes, every job lost, and every family hit with higher bills will serve as a regular reminder of the choice House Republicans made today.”

The Republican reconciliation bill will create energy scarcity and unreliability at the worst possible time. With energy demand surging due to AI, data centers, and extreme heat, 93 percent of all new electricity capacity last year came from solar, wind, and batteries. By imposing a new energy tax on American clean energy, Republicans are guaranteeing higher utility bills for families and businesses nationwide.

Across the country, nearly 3.5 millionAmericans work every day to deliver clean energy to the grid. In 2023 alone, clean energy companies added more than 150,000 jobs to the market, with every sector of the clean energy economy growing at least twice as fast as overall national employment. Clean energy tax credits have ushered in historic investments to counties across the country, particularly in Republican-held districts, generating more than $840 billion in total investments.
